Vision statement: Our vision is to expand the services we provide in patient care, education and research and grow to become one of the leading endocrinology departments of the country. We envisage that the department will provide high quality endocrine care to patients with diverse endocrine conditions such as disorders of pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, gonads, metabolic bone disorders, diabetes, obesity and metabolism.

Mission statement: Our mission is to develop into a center of excellence for endocrine care by providing comprehensive and holistic endocrine care for common and rare endocrine disorders with a focus on providing patient centric care of the highest standard.

• Patient management: Our first focus is providing state of the art patient management and to this end we aim to start specialized clinics for in-depth management of disorders such as bone health, pituitary disorders, adrenal disorders, obesity, gestational diabetes mellitus, type 1 diabetes mellitus, inherited endocrine cancer syndromes and long-term endocrine effects of cancer treatment. Diabetes and obesity are particular areas where we are trying to improve public awareness and also act as advocates for patient health and financial and administrative support at the government level. We also aim to enhance diabetes care in the region with a focus on providing effective patient education, follow up and complication screening. We target to provide affordable high quality diabetes care with availability of insulin and glucose monitoring devices for all along with high end technological innovations such as insulin pumps, continuous and flash glucose monitoring systems. We also aim to streamline and strengthen newborn screening for congenital hypothyroidism and timely referral in the state.
• Diagnostic facilities- In the coming years we target to build up the diagnostic testing facilities offered by the department with the inclusion of DEXA machine for bone health assessment, a comprehensive array of endocrine laboratory investigations and dynamic endocrine tests and molecular genetic testing for endocrine disorders.
• Education and research- We are currently offering a post-doctoral certificate one year course in pediatric endocrinology and a 3-year DM course in Endocrinology. We also envisage building up the research output of the department with collaborations with other departments within the hospital and both national and international endocrine centers with a focus on metabolic research.

Services Available in the department:

1. • Outpatients department:
   • In-patients department: The department has a 20 bedded ward where we admit patients for glycemic control& management; diagnostic evaluation and for management of endocrine disorders. We also provide consults to and work in close collaboration with various allied departments such as Neurosurgery, Surgical Oncology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery, Nuclear Medicine, General surgery, General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT and Urology.
   • Procedures (Diagnostic and/or Therapeutic) offered by the department:
     • We offer various diagnostic endocrine dynamic testing such as:
       • Anterior pituitary function evaluation by: Growth hormone stimulation tests, Growth hormone suppression test, GnRH stimulation test, ACTH stimulation test
       • Evaluation of posterior pituitary function by: Water deprivation testing
       • Evaluation of adrenal disorders by- Dexamethasone suppression test, ACTH stimulation testing, Aldosterone and renin sampling, Saline suppression test
       • Gonadal function evaluation- HCG stimulation test
       • Evaluation of hypoglycaemic disorders- Fasting challenge
       • Bone health- DEXA scan- BMD assessment
     • We also offer other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for diabetes management such as Flash glucose monitoring device insertion in collaboration with Division of Diabetes, Dept of General Medicine. Soon we will expand to provide state of the art modern diabetes technology such as Insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring.

Expansion plan

Expansion plan:

We propose to gradually build up our general adult and pediatric endocrinology patient base and then expand our patient services by starting more speciality clinics like gestational diabetes clinic, pituitary clinic, clinic for long term endocrine effects of cancer therapy etc.

We are also in the process of acquiring DXA scan for bone mineral density assessment which would again help in patient care. We also envisage having an endocrine lab in the department with facilities for testing for various endocrine disorders on an in-house basis. This would greatly improve both quality and cost of testing and enable us to deliver optimal and timely patient care. With the start of the DM program in Adult Endocrinology, we aim to expand further in the recent future and start DM course in pediatric endocrinology and PDCC in Diabetes and metabolic medicine one year course as well. Another area of focus is to enable the department to have facilities for research and produce good quality research output from the department.

Expansion planned for the future:

• • Clinical Services: Multidisciplinary diabetes care along with diabetes educators, dietitians, social worker. MDT clinics for bone health, pituitary disorders, late effects of cancer
  • Academics and teaching: To start DM (Endocrinology) and in due course DM (Pediatric Endocrinology) and PhD projects.
  • Research: Collaborative research projects both intra and extramural in the area of Diabetes, Vitamin D, Laboratory and basic endocrinology, Bone health and physiology. To expand and develop molecular endocrinology research services.
