It was established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna’s first phase and supported to be an autonomous body by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2012. Institute follows the globally prevailing principles of education and focuses on development of skills and conceptual knowledge among its students. To achieve the same, institute has adopted newer methods of learning even at undergraduate level that pursue student as a life-long active learner. Contemporary facilities like virtual dissection, skill-laboratory have been made available to the students. Moreover, examination system has been transformed to provide more weightage to formative assessment. Further, institute encourages students to learn from masters from other institutes as well. Hence, many of the departments run collaborative academic programs within the departments of institute as well as organizations of national and global importance. Since inception, AIIMS Rishikesh has actively innovated in curricula and teaching methods thus aspiring towards international standards, for example, the inclusion of humanities course as an integral part of MBBS training is to bring about a humane physician. There are numerous national and international visitors who perform various roles e.g., experts, trainers, researchers and trainees. Institute provides them furnished accommodation in the Guest House as well as annex on first come first serve basis.
Best possible medical facilities are provided to poorest or poor of the land without any discrimination. Institute is serving them through more than 40 departments and 85 specialty clinics. At present, institute has 1060 inpatient beds divided across various specialties. 24x7x365 Emergency services started in early 2017 and have now bifurcated into separate Trauma Surgery and Emergency Medicine services. The institute is committed towards its social responsibility towards all sections of the community. To provide them optimal care, institute has liaison with a number of social clubs and corporate houses. With the help of donors, medical facilities have been strengthened in the institute. We believe in clean and green environment. Saving the paper is an important contribution towards this cause. In an attempt to meet it, institute has shifted to e-governance system in a bid to limit the paper-based system.
The institute is committed to contribute and advance existing medical literature by investing in research through dissertations, thesis, intramural projects and extramural projects with interdepartmental as well as inter-institute collaborations. In addition undergraduate students are encouraged to submit student projects to institute as well as extramural agencies in order to instilling research acumen at this stage. AIIMS Rishikesh has memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a number of national and international universities for biomedical as well as AYUSH research. It has invested considerably in intramural research grants to expand the breadth and depth of research. It has a multi-diagnostic research unit to support lab-based studies. Besides, the Advanced Center of Continuous Professional Development provides ongoing support to faculty and other medical, paramedical professionals for improving clinical, research, and teaching skills.
