“Nursing is an Art and Science of Caring”

College of Nursing, AIIMS, Rishikesh has been started in 2013 and the first of 60 B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing students was admitted in month of July, 2013 through All India Entrance Test, which was conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi. Presently, College of Nursing, is running B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing; M.Sc. Nursing; Post Basic Diploma in Operating Room Nursing and PhD programs.

The College of Nursing believes that nursing is an oldest of the art and the youngest of the profession, which is a caring discipline considered as pivotal health care profession. Values of the nursing profession are rooted in helping the people to promote the health, prevent the illness and caring the individual, family and community during sickness to attain, maintain and recover the optimal health and quality of life from womb to tomb. The success of patient care and the reputation of the hospital largely depend upon the extent of efficiency of nursing care being provided by the nursing personnel.

College of Nursing is dedicated and committed to train and groom nurses by offering premier quality teaching, instructions and guidance in clinical and research areas of modern nursing. Nursing services, education and research activities of the department are par excellence.

The mission of College of Nursing coincides with the institute “we are committed to establish a centre of excellence in nursing education, training, and research imbued with scientific culture, compassion for the sick and commitment to serve the underserved.

Vision

The vision of College of Nursing is to produce highly competent nurse clinicians, advanced nurse practitioners, nurse educationists, nurse administrators and nurse researchers to meet regional, national and global nursing human resource needs.

Aim

To ensure the cost-effective evidence based quality nursing care for individual, family and community through education and grooming the clinically competent, research oriented nurses.

Objectives

  • To prepare nurses for bedside and family care nursing, nursing supervision and nursing administration.
  • To prepare nursing teachers/ faculty to teach and train the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral Nursing level nursing students.
  • To prepare nurse leaders in nursing through post- doctoral fellowship in academic administration in nursing.
  • To prepare clinical nurse leaders in acute and critical care nursing through fellowship in critical care nursing.
  • To prepare nursing personnel to conduct and disseminate research on nursing issues/ problems to ensure Evidence-Based Nursing Practices.
  • To prepare nursing personnel to develop indigenous nursing literature for improving nursing services, education and administration.
  • To offer the short term programmes, training and refreshers courses for the nurse clinicians, nurse administrators, nurse educators and nurse researchers.
  • Providing holistic, evidence based comprehensive quality nursing care to individual and family through integration with nursing service activities.

Scope

The nursing students of all programmes provide services to the indoor and outdoor patients in institute while learning. The nursing faculty and students serve the patients during the scheduled times in all the areas of hospital and community health center and thereby contribute towards patient care services. Education of the patient and relatives is considered as an important responsibility in achieving Millennium Development Goals.

  • The Medical and Surgical Nursing division not only prepare nurses to care for the sick in general medical-surgical specialties, but also to provide specialized care in critical care, cardiothoracic, neurology, neuro-surgery, nephrology, oncology, gastroenterology, diabetes, endocrinology, urology, burns and plastic surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, ENT, immunology and other medical-surgical super specialties.
  • The division of Obstetrics& Gynae. Nursing/Midwifery Nursing train nurses to develop the skill of conducting normal deliveries and care of the newborn babies. With the thrust on Maternal and Child Health Nursing to reduce the high maternal and infant mortality rate, patient education taken as a special responsibility. Domiciliary care services are also provided following delivery and mothers are taught for healthy child rearing practices.
  • The division of Pediatric and Neonatology Nursing train nurses to develop skills of caring the neonates and children with different congenital and acquired morbidities. Furthermore, training in immunization, monitoring normal growth and development, handling pediatric emergencies and teaching the mothers about care and safety of infant, toddler and adolescents also offered.
  • The division of Psychiatric Nursing train nurses in caring for the mentally ill and provides services to the indoor and outdoor patients in psychiatric wards and de-addiction center. Capacity building programs and short term in-service programs for local nurses are also be held periodically to update their knowledge and skills in this specialized area.
  • The division of Community Health Nursing provide comprehensive services to the people under the Community Health Center(s) of the institute. While learning, students will provide antenatal, natal and postnatal services, school health services, family welfare services and health education on prevention of diarrhea and use of oral rehydration solution, prevention of nutritional deficiencies, contraception, non-communicable diseases and immunization etc.
  • The division of Administration, Research and Education aim at innovations and developing and implementation of administrative policies and protocols in nursing administration. Continues capacity building of nurses is one of the important criteria for a centre of excellence in nursing education; therefore, this division is committed in developing and implementation of different specialty and Superspeciality nursing capacity building programs for nurse clinicians, nurse administrators, nurse educators and nurse researchers.
  • Apart from degree programmes, the college conducts short term refresher courses and committed to organize number of Conferences, Workshops, Seminars and updates from time to time on a local, regional or national level and will bring out useful and practical recommendations. Organizing continuing nursing education and participation in the teaching learning processes of filed workers in neighboring agencies will be an integral part of the college activities.

 Centre of Excellence in Nursing Education & Research: Recent Initiatives 

  • State-of-art teaching teaching-learning facilities for the nursing education programs.
  • Auld Nursing, Midwifery, pediatric nursing, community health nursing and mental health nursing simulation labs with wide range of low-to-high fidelity simulators, mannequins and nursing task trainers.
  • Quasi-competency based curriculum and teaching-learning processes focused to train practice ready nurse clinicians, nurse educators, nurse administrators and nurse specialists.
  • Innovations in teaching-learning processes through flipping of classes, use of principles of andragogy, reflections and module based learning to utilize more time in the simulation labs and clinical placements for hands-on-practice of nursing skills to developnursing clinical skills and proficiencies.
  • Reforms in evaluation system by giving more weightage to formative assessment and implementing clinical vignette based assessment of cognitive domain of learning and Objective Structured Long Examination Record (OSLER) and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) for the assessment of affective and psychomotor domain of the learning.
  • Continue faculty development initiatives to nurture faculty to be experts as nurse educator, clinical trainer and academic & research leader.
  • Emphasis on nursing research to develop evidences on national and regional nursing issues through starting doctoral nursing program (PhD) in nursing w.e.f. July, 2017.
  • Motivation of the faculty to bring more and more extramural and intramural research funds and engage in innovations in nursing sciences.
  • Collaboration with different national and international universities and engagement of serval visiting nursing faculties for the exchange of ideas and shared development.

Technologically Advanced Lecture Theaters: Four LTs, and four seminar rooms are fully equipped with technologically advanced audiovisual aids, and sound system.

Adult Nursing Simulation Lab: It is equipped with wide variety of simulators and mannequins for multidisciplinary simulation education for health care professionals; some key facilities to list are:

  • Ten (10) intermediate fidelity full body mannequins to practice wide range of nursing procedures.
  • Two (02) high fidelity simulators to plan and practice complex simulation scenario for nursing and midwifery education.
  • Six (06) half body moderate-to-high fidelity BLS/ ACLS mannequins with digital feedback facilities.
  • Large number of task-trainers for demonstrating and skill development in various nursing procedures such as intravenous fluid administration, blood transfusion, pressure sore care, surgical wound care, intramuscular injection, subcutaneous infection, intradermal injection, surgical suturing and suture removal, oral/endotracheal/ tracheostomy suctioning, oxygen administration, nasogastric tub insertion and feeding and CPR etc.

Child Health Nursing Simulation Lab: Child Health Nursing Simulation Lab provides comprehensive and conducive environment to teach/practice various neonatal and pediatric nursing skills. The key attractions of the child health nursing simulation Labs are:

  • Three (03)Low to high fidelity neonatal simulators and mannequins with 03 Radiant Warmer, one Phototherapy Units, one Neonatal/ Pediatric Resuscitation Kit, one premature baby mannequins.
  • Two (02) High fidelity pediatric care training manikins with SIMPAD, various task trainers, and module-based training mannequins to practice several pediatric nursing skills/ procedures.
  • Neonatal and pediatric assessment equipment for anthropometric assessment and growth and development monitoring.
  • Pediatric play materials of all stages of growth and development.
  • Neonatal and pediatrics anthropometric assessment equipment and machines.

Midwifery Simulation Lab: Midwiferysimulation Lab is highly sophisticated and technologically advanced lab to train and practice all the midwifery skills. Lab is equipped with wide range of low-to-high fidelity simulators, mannequins and equipment; some of the key facilities are:

  • Six (06)real female pelvis, 06 fetal skulls and 02 fetal mannequins to train and practice labour processes.
  • One inter-mediate fidelity full body pregnancy and labour simulator to practice all antenatal, intranatal, postnatal and newborn care skills.
  • Twenty (20) different task trainers to practice essential midwifery skills such as antenatal examination, per-vaginal examination during labour, mechanisms of labour in normal & abnormal presentations, episiotomy incision & repair, placental extraction, & manual removal, management of postpartum hemorrhage, management of shoulder dystocia, Copper-T insertion & removal, breast feeding techniques, manual expression of breast milk, and fetal heartrate monitoring etc.
  • Lab is also equipped with numerous model, equipment related to pregnancy, antenatal, intranatal, postnatal and newborns.
  • Five (5) sets of instrument each for the common obstetrical and gynecological procedures such as normal vaginal delivery, instrumental deliveries, cessation section, gynecological vaginal examination, instruments for Cupper-T insertion, dilatation & curettage and newborn care.
  • Premature baby mannequin to train and practice neonatal resuscitation, immediate care of premature newborn, and breast feeding practices.
  • Wide range of educational media and material for the education of women and family.

Community Health Nursing Lab: Community health nursing Lab is equipped with numerous models, real life scenarios, communication, education media & material and domestic care facilities such as:

  • Home care bags equipped with all the equipment and instruments for the assessment and care of minor ailments at home.
  • Various models to depict the community field and health care facilities such as models of community field village, water treatment plan, PHC, and CHC.
  • Wide range of audiovisual aids, public address system, educational media and material for individual and mass education of family and community.

Mental Health Nursing Lab:  Mental Health Nursing Lab is designed and equipped in such a way to cater to the learning needs of nursing students and enable them to practice essential psychiatric nursing skills in a virtual environment. Some of the key facilities are:

  • This lab is equipped with facilitated with resources to enrich students’ skills in Occupational Therapy Activities, Therapeutic Communication Skills and Counselling Skills through a variety of teaching learning methodologies like Video Teaching, Role play etc.
  • Lab is also equipped to conduct case discussions and simulations using standardized patients and computer generated case scenarios. Lab also equipped to conduct simulation based Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in mental health nursing using mannequins and standard patients

Computer and Nursing Informatics Lab: Computer and nursing informatics lab is equipped with technologically advanced computers, heath information system related dummy software, information and technology facility.

  • There are twenty-six (26) hi-tech personal computers configured with latest technology.
  • Lab is equipped with high speed broadband and Wi-Fi facility to provide uninterrupted internet services for the lab.

  • Setting-up National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) under the Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI at AIIMS, Rishikesh to prioritise and promote nursing research in the country [on the lines of National Institute of Nursing Research, USA.]
  • Setting-up National Simulation Centre for Nursing & Midwifery Education from bridging gap in academics and skill among nurses trained in the region.
  • Stating Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DPN) in serval speciality and super-specialities to provide clinical nurse practitioners/ specialist manpower for the country and region.
