Vision

To be the leaders in the field of Gastro-intestinal, hepato-pancreato-biliary sciences and liver transplantation.

Mission

Our endeavor is to offer clinical and technical skills of highest standards at affordable rates to all strata of the societyalike. The department is already one of the biggest and most experienced in the country in terms of its faculty. Complex abdominal surgeries are being performed with outcomes at par with the current international standards. Minimally invasive (laparoscopic/ robotic) surgery and liver transplantation are two areas of special emphasis for the department. The process of starting liver transplantation is already underway and it will soon see the light of the day. It will be the first center to offer liver transplantation in the state of Uttarakhand and among the select few in the country to do so. The department is already performing complex laparoscopic procedures, it is the preferred approach for most surgeries for non-cancerous as well as cancerous diseases. We intend to become a centre of excellence for laparoscopic surgeries and promote safe laparoscopic surgery training among the surgeons in the adjoining states. Capacity building and training of Surgeons in the adjoining areas will be undertaken to ensure safe surgical practices and timely referral of the needy patients. The department will offer comprehensive care to the patients with digestive diseases by offering integrated services from Surgical and Medical Gastroenterology, dietetics & nutrition, stoma care and patient counselling. Super speciality course (M.Ch) in Surgical Gastroenterology was started in January 2020 with intake of two students in the session. Seats will be offered on bi annual basis so that more and more number of aspirants can be trained in this higher speciality. A number of research projects have been proposed by the departmentand will commence shortly. High quality research and structured resident training program arethe priority of the department.

    • Specialty Clinics/ services (Diagnostic and/or Therapeutic) Schedule- day and consultant wise
  • Procedures (Diagnostic and/or Therapeutic) offered by the department: The department offers treatment for various diseases related to gastro intestinal tract. Whenever indicated, surgeries are preferably performed by laparoscopy/ robotic techniques so as to expedite the patient recovery and minimize post-operative discomfort. Complex Open/ laparoscopic surgeries are performed by the department on regular basis in OR -22, located at level 6 OT complex. Currently OR runs thrice a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) but it will soon be run on daily basis.  Surgeries are performed with state of the art medical equipment like HD laparoscopic system, Da Vinci Xi robotic system, advanced vessel sealing devices (Harmonic, Ligasure) and water jet based liver dissector system. These advanced equipment promotes shorter surgical times, less blood loss and helps in achieving the ultimate goal of ‘safe surgery’. Clinical audit is conducted on monthly basis to maintain a standard level of care and improve the system when required.

Following conditions are dealt/procedures are performed in the department, technique (open/ laparoscopic/robotic) of surgery is individualized as per the indication for surgery, medical and social factors.
