Vision

To train undergraduate students, Post Graduates, Interns to function as a Primary Care Physician, researcher and to work effectively in area of public health with a holistic approach towards diseases.

Under Graduation (UG course)3 years100The primary objective of the Department of Community &Family Medicine is to train undergraduate medical students to function as a Primary Care Physician with a holistic approach towards diseases. It is expected that by the end of the training, the students should be able to: –
  • Perform early diagnosis and prescribe treatment (using essential drugs) for the locally endemic health problems in the community and counsel the patients for prevention of diseases in the family.
  • Provide preventive and promotive health care including health education to the most vulnerable sections of the society, for example – children under five years of age, children in urban slums, pregnant women, adolescent girls and elderly persons.
  • Take active participation in National Health Programmes even if they choose to be a private practitioner.
  • Use their knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology in preventing the spread of disease from person-to-person within the family and in the community.
  • Use their knowledge of general epidemiology in planning and conducting community-based-research of good quality. They should also be capable of evaluating the results of evidence based research studies before adopting them in clinical practice.
  • Provide promotive preventive curative rehabilitative heath care to the workers in the various occupations (Occupational Health).
  • Apply the principles of primordial, primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in solving health problems of a community rather than a curative approach.
Post-Graduation (PG course)4 years4Postgraduates are being trained to be able to:
  • Function as public health specialists in context of implementation, monitoring and evaluation of national programmes as well as other public health problems prevalent in country by local area.
  • Function as primary care /family physicians in diagnosing and treating common health problems in a comprehensive manner using a holistic approach.
  • Function as researchers in conducting community and hospital-based research of high quality and be able to mentor research studies in future.
  • Function as good teachers of the discipline and impart top quality training to under graduates and other students as well as act as motivator for bringing about changes in the community.
Training includes: –
  • Regular seminars and journal clubs
  • Regular field visits with undergraduate students
  • Postings at RHTC/UHTC/ Family Medicine clinic
  • Short postings at various clinical departments
  • Group discussions and classes with faculty members
  • Attending national and international conferences, workshops etc.
  • Regular assessment and feedback of their performance
Master in Public Health (MPH)2 years4Goal of the MPH program is to provide training, research and service activities that develop public health professionals, health care providers, Social Health Activist and researchers to plan, develop, implement, monitor and evaluate population-based and authenticated individual approaches for quality health care. At the end of the program the MPH student shall endeavour to be able to:
  • Recognize `health for all’ as a national goal and right of all citizens and thereby fulfil his / her social obligation toward realization of this goal.
  • Able to -
    • Understand the distribution of major determinants of health in populations relevant into the practice of public health and manage the same at different level of health care agencies.
    • Effectively contribute to the management of health services,
    • Analyse risks and devise strategies for a healthier environment, a safer workplace, and fewer injuries,
    • Identify ways in which changes in behaviour and social structures may affect the health of populations;
  • Develop the attitude for continued self-learning and to seek further expertise or to pursue research in any chosen area of health care
  • Explore Opportunities to facilitate collaboration, networking with international and national level institutes /organizations /foundations for promotion, advancement and sharing of academic and research knowledge and activities in medicine, health and allied sciences for human development.
  • Demonstrate the professionalism, communication and leadership skill while working as member of health care team.
