MISSION

  • To improve health care services for the elderly
  • To provide a Comprehensive Preventive, Curative and Rehabilitative service at all levels of healthcare delivery.

OBJECTIVES

  • The objective of developing Geriatric department in our Institute is to deliver high quality health care to elderly citizens with multiple diseases, improve capacity building and train manpower in Geriatric Services and promote quality research to develop guidelines.
  • Geriatric services have to be developed as an integrated specialty of the institution along with primary care, PMR, AYUSH, Integrative Medicine and NGOs.
  • It will provide Acute Care, Intermediate care and Long-term care in continuum to elderly patients and should focus on improving the functional status, independence and quality of life.

 

Presently we are providing following facilities to older patients:

CLINICAL SERVICES:

Outpatient services at present:

  1. Department is providing a separate Geriatric Medicine outpatient services daily (5 days in the Institute) along with one-day community outreach clinic.
  2. Allied specialty services are being utilized for referral. including Ophthalmology, ENT, Urology, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Dental and PMR.
  3. Currently, specialized clinic in Lifestyle/Integrative Medicine and Heart Failure are being run.

Outpatient (for future plans):

Specialized Geriatric Clinics like Incontinence Clinic, Dementia/Memory Clinic, Osteoporosis Clinic, pain & Palliative Clinic, etc

 

Inpatient services at present:

A 20 bedded inpatient service with medical ward having 14 beds, 4 Acute Care beds, and 2 long-term care beds. In addition separate beds have been earmarked for elderly in different specialties like urology, neurology, ENT, Ophthalmology, cardiology, PMR departments.

In patient plans:

Dedicated Geriatric ICU, and increase in long term care beds, with better rehabilitation services.

ACADEMIC & TRAINING COMMITMENT:

 

  1. Post Graduate Course:
  2. Department is already running a post graduate course in geriatric medicine with annual intake of 6 candidates/ year.
  3. Proposal is to start the Diploma course in Geriatric Medicine for in service doctors of State of Uttrakhand.
  4. Post-Doctoral courses:
  5. Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine is already approved. Plan is to take sponsored candidates from the state health services who have completed their Post-Graduation in General Medicine
  6. Various fellowship programs will be initiated in the department gradually.
  7. TOT workshops:

Various workshops for Training the trainers will be organized for state doctors and nurses.

 

RESEARCH ACTIVITY:

  1. Various research activities are already ongoing, both at Institute level and at community level
  2. We have good integration with Ayush Department and also carrying out research projects with them.
