General Surgery


The Department of Surgery is a centre for teaching, patient care and research at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh. The Department is committed to providing the highest quality medical care for our patients, world class education for students and continuing innovative basic science and clinical research.

Clinical services:

Surgical care includes Consultation, Diagnosis, Treatment, Counselling, Prevention and Rehabilitation to all patients and if applicable, to their family members and relatives.

The Department provides the following clinical services to all surgical patients :-

Outpatient Clinics:

Daily outpatient services are being provided since 27.05.2013. The clinics operate from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.

Inpatient Services:

The inpatient services of the Department started from 30.12.2013. The patients are given world class pre and postoperative care, palliative and supportive care.

Surgical Operation Services:

The operation services in the Department started since June 2014. The Department is performing Laparoscopic Surgeries (Basic and Advanced), besides all routine General Surgeries like Breast surgery, Colorectal surgery, Hepatic-pancreato-biliary surgery, etc.

Surgical day care services:

Provides day care facilities for minor Surgery and other procedure without the patients being admitted to wards, for example : Trucut biopsy, Trial without catheter (TWOC), etc.

Academic Activities:

The Department of General Surgery strives to produce doctors with sound professional knowledge, who can practice medicine ethically, have appropriate leadership and administrative qualities and can serve the community with respect and honour.

Research and clinical trials:

The Department of Surgery is actively involved in clinical research. The faculty is pursuing new funding for research at all levels. We are also planning to develop a strong clinical trial component to our research endeavours. The goal is to improve the quality of life for those who come to us.

Future plans :-

  • To start state of the art Emergency and Trauma services.
  • To start dedicated speciality clinics life Breast clinic, Podiatry clinic, Proctology clinic, Oncology clinic, etc.
  • Establish a centre for weight management and wellness
  • ATLS training centre.
