General Surgery


The Department of Surgery is a centre for teaching, patient care and research at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh. The Department is committed to providing the highest quality of medical care for our patients, world class education for students and continuing innovative basic science and clinical research.

Teaching Activities

Student Educational Activities

The educational mission for the Department is to cultivate future leaders in Surgery. At present the Department is actively involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical students. The Surgery curriculum starts in the 3rd semester of the MBBS program and continues up to 9th semester.

Clinical Teaching:

Three semesters are posted at a time in the Department of Surgery for learning the clinical skills. During the three hours of clinical class every day, the students are made to understand the cognitive basis of skills, these skills are demonstrated and finally they get an opportunity to practice these skills on patients under supervision.

Lectures/ Tutorials:

The Department has been allotted lectures & tutorials per week for different semesters. The faculty in the Department makes every effort to make these classes as interactive as possible. We are also arranging small group discussions and problem based learning sessions on a regular basis.

Clinical Services

OPD Services:

The OPD services are being provided to patients on weekdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Patients with surgical diseases like thyroid adenoma and carcinoma, Breast diseases, both benign and malignant, Hepatopancreaatobiliary diseases like liver tumors, liver cirhossis, liver abscess, gall stone disease and gall bladder cancer, biliary strictures, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic malignancy, colorectal diseases, hernia, both groin and ventral are being treated.

Average no. of patients seen in the OPD every month = 975

Special Clinic:

A dedicated Breast Clinic functions on every Wednesday & Thursday in room no. 1006 of the Surgical OPD complex. Apart from giving treatment, these patients are counselled and taught breast self-examination and are educated about breast cancer awareness.

IPD and OT services

The Inpatient services of the Department started from 30.12.2013. The patients are given world class pre and postoperative care, palliative and supportive care.

The operative services in Department started since June 2014. The Department is performing all types of advanced surgeries, besides all routine General Surgeries like Breast surgery, Colorectal surgery, Hepatic- pancreato-biliary surgery, etc. Some notable surgical accomplishments of the Department are :

  • Laparoscopic surgery: Hydatid cyst of liver, Plication of eventration of diaphragm, CBD exploration, Recurrent incisional hernias, Morgagni’s hernia, Laparoscopic Nephrectomy, Ureterolithotomy.
  • Head & Neck surgery: Total thyroidectomy with MRND, hemithyroidectomy, Parotidectomy.
  • GI surgery: Hepaticojejunostomy, Pancreaticojejunostomy, Hemicolectomy, Gastric GIST.
  • Oncosurgery : Radical Nephrectomy, Abdomino Perineal Resection, Hepatic Resection, Skin sparing mastectomy, Radical cholecystectomy, Radical Gastrectomy,Radical cystectomy.
  • Urology: Nephrectomy,Pyelolithitomy, Nephrolithotomy

Very recently the department has operated patients with very rare Neuroendocrine tumors of the Gall bladders, Stomach and Pancreas.

Surgical day care services:

Provides day care facilities for minor surgery and other procedure without the patients being admitted to wards, for example: trucut biopsy, Trial without catheter (TWOC), soft tissue abscesses, lipoma, sebaceous cyst, etc.

Academic Achievements:

The Department conducted a live operative Workshop onMIPH on 02.03.2017.

Dr. Amit Gupta, Associate Professor in the Department of General Surgery won the second prize in the poster presentation “Neuroendocrine carcinoma of gall bladder : A rare presentation” ASI Delhi state chapter SURGICON2016 held at New Delhi 12th -13th November 2016.

Dr.Amit Gupta was conferred the Fellowship (FIAGES) of Indian Association of Gastro-intestinal Endosurgeons.

Dr.Farhanul Huda was conferred the Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery by the Indian Association of Gastro-intestinal Endosurgeons.

Research and Clinical trails:

The Department of Surgery is actively involved in clinical research. The faculty is pursuing new funding for research at all levels. We are also planning to develop a strong clinical trial component to our research endeavours. The goal is to improve the quality of life for those who come to us.

Outreach Programs/Community Service :

  • The department, in collaboration with the Department of medicine, had conducted an awareness programme about the surgical complications of diabetes mellitus on the occasion of World Diabetes Week held in the Institute.
  • The faculty of the Department was involved in First Aid training workshop of engineering students for NIT, Srinagar, Uttarakhand.

Under Graduate Teaching :

Vertical Integration with super specialty in surgery, PBL, OSCE, Adopting the concept of SPIRAL CURRICULUM, OMP for teaching clinical reasoning, Self-directed learning, E- learning, Simulations, Student projects.

Post Graduate Teaching :

Initiation of MS program, Case discussions/Journal club/Clinico-Radiology meet/Clinico-pathology meet, Webinar, Surgical audit, Emphasis on clinical decision making, Communication skills, Simulation programs, Research methodology, Teaching methods, Health economics, Medical ethics, Legal issues.
