What is a Nuclear Scan?
These are imaging procedures done by administering very small quantities of radioisotopes in your body and producing images of a particular organ of interest to diagnose various diseases.
- Other disease like those of the thyroid ,kidney ,heart ,liver, brain etc. are also diagnosed by nuclear medicine
Nuclear Scans are safe and easily performed with minimal discomfort except a small injection in most cases.
These procedures help in detecting functional problems in your organs like kidneys, bones, heart etc. non-invasively.
Why should I get a Nuclear Scan ?
They provide additional and different information in comparison to X-Rays/ CT Scans/MRI. Mostly a Nuclear Scan may be followed with a Radiological imaging procedure like CT/MRI once the problem is detected or after Radiology in order to know the functional importance of a problem seen in an X-Ray or CT/MRI.
When should I get a Nuclear Scan?

Are These Scans Safe? How do I prepare for these Scans?
Yes.The nuclear medicine procedures most of the times do not require any patient preparation like fasting, they can be done after a regular meal/breakfast at any time of the day as per patient's convenience. The procedures may require waiting period of a few hours during which he can wait comfortably within the department and eat /drink as he desires
There are no side effects/allergic reactions or other hazards in these scans as is believed by most people. There is no major radiation exposure and the exposure is lesser than a routine CT scan with contrast or a few degrees more than a common x-ray which we do. Even seriously ill patients - with renal failure, liver failure etc. can undergo routine nuclear medicine procedures safely as the dose injected is very low to cause any side effects to the organs involved or to other members of the family.
Are the Nuclear Scans Expensive?
Nuclear Scans require injection of expensive isotopes which are procured from special agencies. Hence they are a bit more expensive than routine tests.
How are the Nuclear Scans scheduled?
The services provided utilizes radioactive medicines which are procured on regular basis and have a shelf life of a few days which requires proper scheduling of the patients in order to avoid wastage. Medicines may sometimes be ordered specially for rarer procedures due to which patient may be given an appointment and be intimated when it arrives as per schedule. However, most common procedures are available on daily basis.
