Department of Neonatology
AIIMS, Rishikesh
Introduction: The Department of Neonatology made a modest beginning in November 2017 and is providing comprehensive care services to neonates. Presently we are having a 12-bedded neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and are managing cases of prematurity, extremely low birth weight, perinatal asphyxia, respiratory distress, hyperbilirubinemia, neonatal sepsis, seizure etc. Patient services currently being provided by the unit are:
  • Mechanical ventilation
  • Bubble CPAP, high flow nasal cannula
  • Surfactant replacement therapy
  • Parental nutrition
  • Central line placement
  • Phototherapy and Exchange Transfusion
  • Thyroid profile screening
  • ROP screening
  • Universal hearing screening
We are also following up our neonates after discharge with a follow up rate close to 80% in the high risk follow up clinic. Academic activities
  • Undergraduate: Didactic lectures, Integrated teaching, Tutorials and bedside Clinics
  • Postgraduate: Seminars, Journal clubs, Clinical Audits, Case Presentations, bedside Clinics
Training program organized:
  • Neonatal resuscitation program
  • Facility based newborn care
Future plans:
  1. To develop a state-of-the-art tertiary care neonatal referral center in AIIMS Rishikesh
  2. To run round-the-clock neonatal emergency services
  3. To start neonatal sub-speciality clinics
  4. Establishment of human milk bank
  5. To start ECMO services
  6. Outcome based teaching and training of Pediatric (MD Pediatrics) and Neonatal (DM Neonatology) trainees
  7. Regular training of Medical Officers and Neonatal Nurses across the State
  8. Observer ship of trained Medical Officers and Neonatal Nurses in AIIMS Rishikesh for a period of 2 weeks
  9. Regular mentoring visits to SNCUs of Uttarakhand
  10. Establishment of a database of newborn morbidity and mortality in the State
  11. Establishment of transport unit for transporting sick neonates
  12. Establishment of tele-conference facility
  13. To develop an international collaborative center for neonatal training including faculty and resident exchange program.
